* Why is Obama so obsessed with everybody getting health insurance? Health insurance, by itself, is absolutely and totally useless. It’s like when you explain to somebody that money is worthless–you could have a barn full of it and it is just paper if you can’t get it out of the barn and exchange it for actual goods. Health insurance is just a way to help pay for something of value. It’s a way to pay for something that is far more expensive than it should be. Obama doesn’t want to reduce the cost of healthcare, he wants to help more people pay for the outrageous costs.
* He admits that Medicare and Medicaid are our deficit problem. Those two programs make up almost a quarter of our annual federal spending. According to Wikipedia, in 2009 they will cost us $632 billion. Keep that number in mind.
* He brags that “even drug companies” support healthcare reform. First off the drug companies are not to be trusted by any stretch of the imagination and maybe some day I will explain this for those who are not aware, and secondly it’s for this reason that we should all be seeing a big waving red flag when Obama brags about having their support. Anything the drug companies want should be opposed, in my opinion. They are not your friends, they just want your money. You are a consumer when it comes to healthcare, you should not be happy to see the people you must buy from are overjoyed with Obama’s plans. You should be looking to see how your fellow consumers feel about it, and it is quite obvious that the CONSUMERS (meaning people who actually currently pay for their healthcare) don’t seem very happy.
* He says that if you currently have private insurance, “nothing in the plan will require you to change the coverage you have.” Unless of course your company drops your coverage because it’s cheaper for them to pay the fine.
* Santa Claus goes on to say it will be against the law for insurance companies to deny coverage because of a pre-existing condition, there will be no “arbitrary” cap on what you can receive in a year, “or a lifetime,” and the government will limit the amount you can be charged out of pocket. I really don’t know how anybody can take this seriously.
* If you do not have insurance, “quality, affordable choices” will be made available to you via an “insurance exchange.”
* But if you can’t afford the “quality, affordable” option, the government is going to give you tax credits so you can pay for it.
* Here’s the first of two big ones: THERE WILL BE A REQUIREMENT THAT EVERYBODY ENROLLS IN HEALTH INSURANCE. He refers to young people who do not want to buy it as “irresponsible.”
* The second: BUSINESSES WILL BE REQUIRED TO OFFER INSURANCE TO THEIR EMPLOYEES.
* He claims it’s “a lie” that “the plan” will insure illegal immigrants. Oh, of course not–but our federal dollars will still be picking up the bill so does it really matter? In fact, why not require they purchase insurance as well? They get to continue to be what Obama refers to as “irresponsible,” while American college students will now be forced into buying in.
* The “defining moment” of the night occurred here, though its interpretation has been varied and only time will really tell.
